<image:loc>https://www.scanlan.com/images/xl/Wave-of-Color-Kinsale-Ireland-County-Cork-Clare.jpg</image:loc>
<image:caption>Kinsale, Ireland, on the southern Cork coast, is a generally active village. Fishing occupies the time and interests of many. Good restaurants abound. Bread-and-breakfasts line the colorful streets. But even in this lively village, one street in particular stood out. It just couldn't stay still! Colors - bold purples, excited yellows, and flashy reds - seemed to jump from the walls of the buildings. Flowers burst from windows, sills and containers. Even the sidewalks undulated with dips and rises to escort rain waters away from doorways. And the result? A veritable wave of color.</image:caption>

			<image:loc>https://www.scanlan.com/images/xl/Top-Of-The-Morning-Ireland-Gougane-Barra-St.-Finbar-Chapel.jpg</image:loc>
<image:caption>In Ireland you would be surprised by the amount of greetings you get; especially when they know you are from out of town. It doesn't seem to matter to them; you are an Irishman for that moment. So long as you have a smile (and a pint doesn't hurt) and a friendly greeting, you are set. This fact is probably one of biggest reasons why Ireland holds a special place in my heart; my homeland. And on this morning, even the sun and the sky and the placid lake seemed to greet me and the day ahead with that ever-friendly phrase; top of the morning to you.</image:caption>

			<image:title>The Grove</image:title>
<image:caption>On cloudy days like these, no matter what time of day, you can never seem to escape the mysterious dark clouds suspended above you. On this particular road however, the grove of warped and weathered trees offer you an escape from the ever-present clouds. The twisted gray limbs create a halo in the sky that makes them untouchable by the clouds that encase them. Although the gloom looks as though it may overcome you, it is the farthest thing from the truth. Instead you get lost in the mysterious path that leads you to that unexpected destination. You are neither anxious nor nervous because you know that something this fantastical can only lead you somewhere you want to go. </image:caption>

			<image:loc>https://www.scanlan.com/images/xl/Temple-Bar-Ireland-Pub-Famous-Guinness-Jameson.jpg</image:loc>
<image:caption>The Temple Bar is the type of place you would call "a statement" mostly because of its brightly colored crimson facade and black trim that traces the outline of the building. It adorns the corner of the street as a definite prominent figure. You could say that its name, The Temple Bar, describes it well. To me it is truly a temple, not the kind dedicated to religion, but one that has housed laughter, friends, and cheers throughout the years. That is truly the only way you can describe this ostentatious bar and in my opinion, the only way it would want to be remembered.</image:caption>

			<image:title>Soft Day</image:title>
			<image:caption>
A hard shot on a soft day. What made a scene perfect made it perfectly difficult to get. We discovered a setting with all the components of the Irish landscape paradigm: sheep lounging in a gully, a stone bridge spanning a meandering stream, lush grass clinging to a craggy landscape, mist hanging in the background. But on this day on the isle, other elements were at work. Our tripod hugged the ground to escape the wind, and our camera took refuge under an umbrella to escape the mist on this "soft" day. </image:caption>

<image:caption>This pub's namesake is one that is known throughout the world. The bachelor detective's life revolved around areas next to and around this pub that was once known at the Northumberland Hotel. Originally a small lodging house, it has done just that in housing patrons and quirky detectives alike throughout the many years of its operation. Although refurbished and restored, one can still stop and try to hear the distant cry of a Baskerville hound while sipping their dram, or catch a glimpse of the cunning Holmes and Watson dashing through the door in a fleeting attempt to unmask the villain of their last great caper. </image:caption>

<image:caption>The Cotswold Hills in England define charm. The same could be said of the people. In the tiny village of Broad Camden, lying just outside the much larger village of Chipping Camden, a gathering of thatched-roof cottages peek through boxwood hedges, hydrangeas and tall trees. In this quiet, untraveled spot, a cottage dense with blooms and foliage caught our eye.

We knocked on the wooden door, which was soon opened by the cottage's owner. Would she mind if we took a photograph of her house? we asked. Of course, she replied, excited and flattered that the front of her house might merit such attention. As soon as we had completed the shot, she kindly asked us in, then proudly took us through her home to the back. There, on the other side of this flowering magnificence, was yet more. More flowers in a beautiful cottage garden as welcoming as the woman herself.</image:caption>

It was at this same Bed & Breakfast three years earlier that I was given a suggestion of a place I might consider shooting; a small chapel on a lake in the mountains of County Cork. I headed out early to take advantage of calm winds and perfect light. An elderly Irishman, walking along the road, informed me of the quickest route to take. When I arrived, I witnessed the boats, the chapel, the misty mountains fading in the background and my own pondering, all to be a perfect moment of reflection.</image:caption>

Like an artist, He works carefully to blend each hue of morning into one fluid stroke not only to stretch out over the sky but to also be reflected in the glass shimmer of the lake that it surrounds. The boat, in perfect placement, waits for a passenger to carry into the promised land.</image:caption>

While these jutting rock formations may be just that, you can't help but let your mind wander through the hills and imagine the giant who formed them. I like to think this door is the entrance to such a place. The yew tree has long been known to be the "tree of death" because it is poisoners to animals. That meaning can take place here as well but in a different way. The death of normalcy and the rebirth of the magical. What better sentries to guard the entrance to middle earth than that of such an ancient tree? They are magical in themselves which makes this journey all the more fantastic; don't yew think? </image:caption>

Haddon Hall, considered one of the most romantic English manor homes, is noted for its spectacular roses. The gardener put us in contact with a gentleman who gave us permission to bring our equipment into the gardens. We were given a special tour and access to all the estate grounds. Nestled on the side of a hill above a lazy river, Haddon Hall is the epitome of romance. It's clearly evident that tremendous care has been taken to maintain the grounds and gardens. How the decayed roof no longer provides shelter from the elements. Personally, I've been seeking out the positives that life has to offer and with that comes a new outlook on many things; one being this house. Now, I see a peaceful retreat for the sheep and a shady lawn to lay. I see a design of sun rays that splash through the roof onto the walls, giving them life. I see the story of a time past where a family had once lived and loved. When all we see is what is gone; we miss what is still there.</image:caption>

I see the draw of that life; or at least how that life used to be. How everything used to be; simple. But seeing these boats anchored in this cove with water so clear and emerald the mystery of the ocean floor eludes you; I was brought back to a simpler time when there was just a boat, the ocean, and the sun on the horizon.</image:caption>

These docks do not offer the pristine beauty of perfection, but to me they offered something better; a type of rugged beauty that sets them aside from the usual and I think that is what drew me to them in the first place. There was nothing special about them, and yet that is what made them special. This, however, is not the case with this Las Catedrales beach. It offers a different kind of worship; one of raw nature and effortlessness that rivals even the most benevolent cathedrals. This beach earned its name for its colossal stone formations that touch the sky with no help from mankind; a place so striking that you feel at one with the creator. The first light of the sun shines on the blank page, beckoning us to write that day's story. It should come as no surprise that I love to create and each day that blank page calls to me much like the first light of the day. I found myself drawn to the lake and the church throughout my trip and yet nothing had sparked that creativity to write; to shoot; until the day of the image. <image:caption>Somewhere far beyond the horizon lies the unknown. A beacon we feel we can never quite find. The rocks on the shore lead us towards the setting sun; the only thing to truly see what lies beyond. With the water resting on the sand in smooth arrays we fight the urge to take a heavenly step onto the sea, being drawn to something eternally out of our grasps; yet something we get to be a part of each and every day as the sun completes its voyage and can rest beyond the horizon.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A dock such as this clearly shows character, a type of character that can sometimes be non-existent in humans. That character is endurance, the type that sets you aside from the others and makes you stand out and stand up against anything that threatens to capture you. This dock was once a sturdy path from land to sea, and as we see it now, that journey is no longer possible. We can, however, still see the path that was tread before, not physically, but symbolically. All that remains are the posts that stand erect on either side, the support that has stood up against all odds. They still stand, allowing your eyes to wander beyond this forever symbol of endurance.</image:caption>

<image:caption>During the day, the streets are bustling and the shops are full. Although the hustle and bustle of a little Spanish town is still charming, I prefer the evenings. When the only occupants in town are tucked into cozy cafés and restaurants, the whole air seems to change. It's as if the flute playing the merry tune of morning has slowed to the soothing sound of a french horn serenading the sun as it drifts to sleep. It truly can be hard to capture such a feeling with just the click of the camera; but even after looking at the image now, I can hear that same melody waltzing down the cobblestones beyond the twilight.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sharing our experiences with people, and more importantly, our images, has always been the cornerstone of what we've built this business on. However, on a recent trip to Bled, Slovenia after four days of low clouds and dismal lighting, I was afraid there would be no images to share from this trip. With five days to shoot, I felt I gave myself adequate time to capture one of Europe's most beautiful places, the 15th century church of the Assumption of Mary. Sitting on Slovenia's only island, the church is part of an idyllic back-drop, unfortunately, the weather was relentlessly jeopardizing my chances to capture the scene I wanted. On the morning of my departure, feeling frustrated about the shoot thus far, the clouds began to dissipate, revealing a variety of dramatic lighting situations in about a two-hour time-frame. It was another fabulous experience to share……minus the first 4 days.</image:caption>

			<image:title>A Good Year For Wine</image:title>
<image:caption>Wine is known to get better with age and as I stepped down into this cellar, I could smell age all around me. The air was musty and dry and smelled of smoke. Inside were oak barrels where the wine was being fused with dramatic flavors and subtle notes of each individual grape that combine over the years to make the perfect blend. I stood and imagined what each vintage must taste like. With wine, you are able to experience years of memories in one glass; the earthy tones from the ground, the bite of a bold grape maturing, or that smoky finish from the aged barrels. From each, the ageless flavor will last forever . . . not unlike a photograph. </image:caption>

<image:caption>As we travel, we become aware that the laws of the natural world apply universally. The simple consistency in the rising and setting of the sun reminds us of our commonalities, rather than our differences. The sun rests at the end of the day in the outer reaches of our world, just as it does at home.

Even so, the sun's recline can stand out as unusual in any locale. Sitting outside in the rooftop restaurant of a Prague hotel, we witnessed one of those sunsets that etch themselves into memory. As we enjoyed our meal in the evening air, warm despite the day's drawing closed, the lights in the old town square illuminated shadowy forms, like ghosts of the past. Above, the sky slowly transformed itself under the sun's sleepy eye. Like a rose blooming, pale pink became scarlet, then lavender, then violet. And we sat, amazed, again, at the wonder of the world, that its beauty can find us wherever we are.</image:caption>

Unlike other bridges, Charles Bridge is manned with stone sentinels that take the shape of saints that were venerated during that time period. They stand guard and watch as people once crossed from Old Town to the Lesser Quarter. While on the bridge their prestige fell into the water and they were only human. Passing by saints and sinners alike. Today the bridge stands as a way across the water; its crossers still being viewed in the sunrises and sunsets as silhouettes of people. No titles, no color, no rank. Just people together, going about their lives as equals.</image:caption>

Although this image has no shortage of light, the church that stands is its own light; a more celestial and divine light. It guides weary travelers thru its doors and offers a different kind of guidance that cannot be found on a map but rather through folded hands, closed eyes, and silent prayer. So striking and yet so graceful at the same time. With this particular mare, I was able to take pause and catch her peering at me, stock still with a look of demure on her face. <image:caption>Even in the light, memories can haunt. Charles Bridge, an icon in the city of Prague, bears testimony to the residual strength of long-held tyranny. On one particular day, the sun might rise brightly over the metalwork, burning off the morning fog as well as the memories of a strict and stifling political climate.
The next day, the fog might briefly hold its own against the sun's warmth, creating an image of the bridge - and perhaps life itself - that appears sterile and colorless, drawn in shades of gray. And we are thankful that the image is only that: a picture of a moment in time, ephemeral, like the movements of ghosts in ethereal.</image:caption>

I waited for both weather and time to come together to create a view that captured what has become the symbol of Pebble Beach. A steady downpour of rain slowed me down, but once the rain passed and the sky cleared, everything came together to make this shot happen. I had to work quickly, as all but a few minutes of light were left in the day. The sun's brilliant post storm color wrapped the tree in incredible tones. The waves crashed constantly on the shore to provide an element of drama. Amazing blue tones bestowed light from the approaching nightfall. On the shore of one of the British Virgin Islands, a palm tree stretches over the water, the bend in its neck arched perfectly for lazily swinging a rope and tire. Traces of just such leisure remain, in a path worn into the bark. A little boat nearby appears to have taken up happy residence, the weight of its sand-filled hull anchoring it against the tides. The water wheel was old and rusted and matched the feel of the entire scene that lay before me. The ground was showered in sheets of color acting as a reflector for the trees. <image:caption>Buried in the abandoned town of Kolmanskop are homes, doors, and memories. What was once a diamond town, now only glistens with the grains of sand that rule the ruins of the structures left behind. This great wooden door that once stood with open arms, has now been laid down to rest, and in its place stands an immovable dune that threatens to grow with each passing second. This door was not buried in a day, but has slept for years now, continually being buried with time.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An ensemble is often thought of as a group of people performing together, whether that be actors, musicians, dancers, or the like. Here, however we don't see any performers per se but rather objects that have just finished their final dance. An ensemble of nature that clearly has stood the test of time and the harshness of the dessert. Something like this can be experienced long after the curtain closes which is something, I think, we can be eternally grateful for.</image:caption>

In passing this door, that's probably all you see; a door. But if you stop and gaze, you see the wall that surrounds the door. You see the pinks fading into blues, greens and yellows. The blue crackles with the pink to create, ever so slightly, a violet that you see hiding in the plaster and you realize how this symphony of color could have ever been overlooked. Like so many things in life, beauty can sometimes be masked but it's there just the same. So although we may not have been looking, it's precisely what we found in Evora.</image:caption>

Nestled in the hills, the sight of this church sings a hymn all its own. With the birds as its choir, the sun as its spotlight, this hymnal weaves its way down valleys, across mountains, and through the ever-present fog of the dawn; making it impossible to hear a doubtful thought or melancholy feeling. This church and the song that it sings spreads joy far and near; gracing each person who hears its melody.</image:caption>

The first light of the day brings about a new beginning each morning. As the sun sets, it turns the page of the day to a new chapter. Everything flowed and danced so perfectly that as the sun set on that day, I turned my page with a smile on my face and a view in my mind that I'd hoped would never fade.</image:caption>

During the day, the streets are bustling and the shops are full.

The words, the cathedrals, create a myriad of images that form in our minds; a picture of grandiose stone and marble architecture stretching it's fingertips to the sky with spires that carry the prayers of the people to the heavens. Wine is known to get better with age and as I stepped down into this cellar, I could smell age all around me.

On this particular stretch of docks that weave their ways in and out of the tumultuous sea, you have to stop for a moment to truly realize what it must have taken for them to endure all that they have. These docks do not offer the pristine beauty of perfection, but to me they offered something better; a type of rugged beauty that sets them aside from the usual and I think that is what drew me to them in the first place. There was nothing special about them, and yet that is what made them special. It seemed to me that they had created a sense of balance between the usual and the unusual making them truly a sight to see and something that should be revered in days to come.</image:caption>

A dock such as this clearly shows character, a type of character that can sometimes be non-existent in humans.

Sharing our experiences with people, and more importantly, our images, has always been the cornerstone of what we've built this business on. It was another fabulous experience to share; minus the first 4 days.</image:caption>

Middle Earth. Often thought of as a place of Earth but with not so many Earthly qualities. A mystical land of wizards, rings, dwarves and hobbits. They are magical in themselves which makes this journey all the more fantastic; don't yew think?</image:caption>

Probably too often we look at an old house such as this and think how sad and forlorn its empty walls and windows seem.

Dunquin Harbour is a fairly iconic place. Most commonly used for the expedition that takes sheep from the mainland to the distant islands to graze. Although this image doesn't have the hundreds of sheep trekking down the path, I still found that the curving road leading to the sea has a certain something in itself worth capturing. Don't you think?</image:caption>

In Ireland you would be surprised by the amount of greetings you get; especially when they know you are from out of town.

On this particular morning in Ireland I saw a fantastic sight. I saw the stroke of the paintbrush from the Master's hands. Like an artist, He works carefully to blend each hue of morning into one fluid stroke not only to stretch out over the sky but to also be reflected in the glass shimmer of the lake that it surrounds. The boat, in perfect placement, waits for a passenger to carry into the promised land.</image:caption>

Two stone mountains that jut from the water aren't always a scene we find inviting. These two, however, reside in Ireland; therefore, they have been graced with the lush moss from its cool blue water, and have been speckled with the far off sounds of laughter in the air. They are not ordinary, but rather extraordinary, they are not sharp, but soft with age. They sit side by side as two gentle giants watching over their homeland.</image:caption>

The small chapel of St. Finbar is nestled amongst aged trees and the lush blooms of rhododendron. The lake surrounds the small inlet which emanates solidarity. On a morning such as this, I opted to view the chapel from a different perspective so that I could not only see the sanctuary itself, but the beauty that gives it the grace it so deserves. The pink rays that illuminate the valley behind are perfect accents. Nothing moves, everything is frozen in that perfect moment. As for myself, I breath in the moment and be still.</image:caption>

What people may not see upon walking thru the door is that Gogarty's stretches up past the first pub to a whole building of the same dark wood and joyful music. Four stories high the tradition of the Irish goes up just as patron's spirits do with each floor climbed. This pub is one you don't want to miss. The Temple Bar is the type of place you would call "a statement" mostly because of its brightly colored crimson facade and black trim that traces the outline of the building.

It was a typical morning for me on a shoot. I was having breakfast at my Bed & Breakfast wondering which direction to take that day.

For four centuries, golf has been played on the Old course at St. Andrews. For just as long, perhaps, golfers have dreamed of journeying to this veritable golfing wellspring. The course I not alone in luring visitors: the Links Clubhouse, the Old Course Hotel, and the Royal and Ancient Golf club are attractions in their own right. But perhaps most recognizable is a manmade feature on the last hold: the Swilcan Bridge, named for the Swilcan Burn, a stream that wanders across the first and 18th fairways. Originally designed for routine access from town to harbor rather than golfing convenience, the stone bridge has nonetheless become inextricably identified with the course - an icon of an icon.</image:caption>

The Cotswold Hills in England define charm.

The only sign missing from the front window of a pub in Clonakilty was one reading, "Come on in." But from the looks of it, no such invitation was necessary. Bread-and-breakfasts line the colorful streets. But even in this lively village, one street in particular stood out. It just couldn't stay still!Colors - bold purples, excited yellows, and flashy reds - seemed to jump from the walls of the buildings. Flowers burst from windows, sills and containers. Even the sidewalks undulated with dips and rises to escort rain waters away from doorways. And the result? A veritable wave of color.</image:caption>

What a beautiful thing paper is. It can be so many different things; a note, a book, a photograph, a journal; and yet it sometimes gets forgotten in this digital age. I have always loved the tangibility of paper. Being able to physically turn the page of a good book or jot down notes in a journal will never be lost on me and is something I hope to pass on to my children as they grow up in a world where the physical becomes the digital. I think that is why places like this store in Florence speak to me so much. It is all about the touch and feel of paper, journals, and cards and the beauty that they can hold with words and images. The old soul in me prays that places like this continue to stand the test of time just as the written word has for years past and hopefully, for years to come.</image:caption>

Greece Santorini is one place where the absence of color can be beautiful. The white washed buildings are something that you do not see in your everyday life. With that whitewash we can also experience the vibrancy of a single POP of color such as this yellow paint and blue door. Had the building been brick or gray stone these colors might not have evoked the reaction that they do against the starkness of white. As the saying goes; absence makes the heart grow fonder.</image:caption>

When you think "romance" you think Paris, Rome, Barcelona, etc.; all beautiful places filled with small cafes, couples kissing, and romantic montages at every corner. At least that is what we are given to believe in movies, books and the like. But I think that Greece, specifically Santorini, gets short changed in the romance department. Looking at this scene through my lens I was completely caught up in the romantic idea of two young lovers on a balcony overlooking the Caldera, their eyes bright and their skin dark against the starkness of the buildings; sharing one last kiss before sunset.</image:caption>

"When in Rome" is a very common phrase I'm sure you've heard. It's meant to imply that while in Rome, do what you like; explore, take chances, live! But I think we're missing out on the other Italian escapes in which to do those same things just because this phrase makes us think Roma is the only place to truly let go. In Amalfi, I've often found myself a dreamer; someone who looks at the crawling towns on the mountainside and is transported to another world. The town of Amalfi, tucked into the mountain invites sailors with it's warm lights and clean, colorful homes. It's almost as if the setting sun is inviting you into the town, warming you the closer you get and you're forced to think "Ah, Amalfi".</image:caption>

A storm by nature sounds like something to be fearful of. The storm on the ocean with the mountainous waves, the eye of the hurricane, the calm before the storm. All of these things indicate that the storm is the cataclysm rather than the beauty. I think this image challenges that theory by exhibiting just how beautiful a storm can be. The storm is the calm in this instance and that's something I think many could do well with if they applied that to life. Not all storms are to be feared, some are meant to be embraced as they show us a new kind of beauty.</image:caption>

Something I look forward to at the end of every day is the sunset. The sunset at the end of the day is like the cherry on top of an already gorgeous location. In this instance that theory rings even more true. You can't possibly look at this image and not be grateful for this brief moment in time each day that the sun sets the clouds on fire.</image:caption>

Seemingly secluded, this chapel seems truly at peace next to the water. With boats for both leisure and necessity we can imagine what life could be like if this was a home. With forests to explore, water to tread, and land to roam, you can become enlightened by how simple it all would be. With everything in the world today speeding around us, it can be an exhilarating thing to simply imagine what life could be like if everything was completely and utterly at peace.</image:caption>

I've always loved the Dolomites because of their massiveness. Their jagged peaks do a wonderful job at reminding us just how high we have to reach to touch the sky. Aside from their grandeur, I also love them because they are home to chapels such as this. Something so small with something so big can give us the perspective we need when it comes to our faith, our lives, our world. So, as simple as it may be, its importance remains because without that chapel; it would be just another meadow. Without the mountains there wouldn't even be a meadow. But combine them all and you get the full wonderful picture; a chapel in the meadow.</image:caption>

In Venezia, a city with no roads, it's easy to find yourself lost in a maze of watery paths and bridges to what seems like nowhere. After travelling down alley after alley, we can emerge in any number of the hidden gems Venice hides on her island; places much like this stone passageway. It's unlike any alley or waterway in that it invites us to be bathed in the cool light giving it an almost otherworldly air. We start to travel down it with anticipation as it leads us back into Venezia and towards our next adventure.</image:caption>

We were on our way to Venice through the Dolomite mountains in northern Italy, when we decided to avail ourselves of the rare break in the gloomy weather and head north to a village about a hundred miles outside our planned route. At the end of a box canyon, the village sits quietly - secretly almost, for the mountains give no portent of the scene they conceal. Coming upon it, we were awestruck. The only sounds in this grand place came from church bells ringing in the distance, the stream rushing below us and cow bells clinking in the hills. We quickly set up our camera, racing against the fickle light. Twenty minutes later, the scene - with its divinely granted light and color and shadow - was gone: the sun dropped below the mountains behind us, the clouds shrouded the peaks, and the village receded in the dusky darkness, hidden once again.</image:caption>

I consider myself a people person. I cherish my time with family and friends. I am also a very faithful person. As difficult as it may seem for me to dedicate my whole life and being to the monastic lifestyle, there is something profoundly calming and reverent about it. In a valley in the heart of Greece where fertile plain meet soaring peaks, there stands a group of monolithic rocks housing numerous monasteries that seem to hover between Heaven and earth. In these lofty fortresses that reach dizzying heights I found myself at peace and wonderment, as if I too were gazing down from Heaven itself.</image:caption>

Tuscany | Italy The rolling hills of Tuscany are endless stories of aged grapes, blossoming wildflowers, golden wheat, and ancient homes inhabited with generations of countrymen. Each layer tells us a different story; one of dawn with each new awakening; one of a quiet afternoon sharing a bottle with your love; and one of dusk, the romanticism ever present in the setting sun. These stories become ingrained in the land, making it a novella of years that have passed; and of years that are still to come.</image:caption>

To us, every canal in Venice is grand; but to the Venetians only one can be named as the true Grand Canal and that is just what it is. Gondolas are known to bestride the canal as they await the brimmed hatted striders to climb aboard and call passersby to join them. Stepping down into the aged vessel a sound begins to wind its way into your ears as the gondolier steers the craft into the canal. The sweet sound grows stronger and with more grandeur as it translates to the sound of love; of amore. Slowly you drift with that sound, trying to hold onto it endlessly. So in walking past these floating melodies, I had to capture their sound with an image, just to hold on to that moment a little while longer.</image:caption>

No matter the way one travels but rather what they see as they glide through the town, some travelers creating waves against the doors that provide refuge from the water. This particular door with this particular wave created something unique; a succession of grand waves uniting the refuge and the sea.</image:caption>

As I sat on the dock, I did not hesitate; but rather moved swiftly to capture the image before the bird made his decision and that fleeting moment of wild hesitation was gone.</image:caption>

Having something carved in stone has a certain finality to it; as if it will never change because it won't. Riding a bike is a rite of passage for any child; it gets you from point A to point B long before driving was even thought of. Any memory is happy on a bike and will stay there long past your youthful years and into the beginnings of your own family where you pass those memories on. So in this image we see something lasting both time and memory; something that has been ridden in stone.</image:caption>

Bella brano translates to beautiful song in Italian. I can't think of a more perfect way to describe a gondolier on the canals of Venice. Some sing a song from their mouths, others create a melody with their oar against the waves with each rhythmic stroke take riders deeper into the melody that is the city of water. Each song whether sung or rowed is deep with meaning, plunging almost as deep as the canals themselves. So yes, a beautiful song is sung with each gondolier you see and if you listen closely, you can be carried away into the harmony yourself.</image:caption>

The light creates something magnificent that darkness merely outlines. The light opens doors that remain closed otherwise; it opens every curve of the vines and traces every road. The cypress trees shed their green cloaks to be bathed only in the golden light being emitted all around. Surely this place is no kingdom, but rather an empire of unending light.</image:caption>

It seems as though everyone in life needs inspiration, an incentive to do great in the world. Though we may not realize it now, it is not the material things that give us this inspiration. It is the beauty and magnificence surrounding us that truly inspires our hearts. While standing on the balcony of the Villa Balbianello, I can honestly say I was inspired, inspired to let people know of the beauty in this world - much like a poet would be to inspire people with the beauty of their words. With Lake Como stretched out in front of me and the mountains behind climbing into the sky, the scene itself became a story, a poem of sublime majesty and beauty, written by the greatest poet the world has ever known.

The buildings of Manarola seem to rise out of the water, giving the illusion they will soon fall back in. With the sun shining down on this quaint fishing village, it too seems as though it will only be aloft for a few short moments before the entire town is enveloped in darkness. For however short a time we see the sun, we should consider ourselves lucky to be exposed to that one beautiful moment in the sun.</image:caption>

Light is almost as unforgettable as the things it illuminates. We seem to take these things for granted, never really stopping to notice or enjoy simplicity such as the color of a flame. In the Cinque Terre town of Riomaggiore, it's nearly impossible to not stop and soak in the warm glow of light cascading down the sea of color that sits amongst the natural beauty of its world. Against the deep blue sky, the colors glow even more bright, creating an irreplaceable moment in time.</image:caption>

No matter how many times you go to the valleys of Tuscany, you can always get that rare sense of mystery when you see the fog settling over the roaming vineyards. You see the warm orange glow of the just-rising sun reflecting off the oranges and yellows of not only the vines, but the trees as well. It's in this moment you have to take the shot. Moments like these are short-lived, yet they are the moments that stay in our minds forever. I remember this memory vividly, the air crisp with color, showing everyone the mystery of daybreak.</image:caption>

In Florence Italy, everything you see is reminiscent of love, romance, faith and adventure. Although the air has a crisp autumn feel to it, the sun exposes itself by casting down its warm rays. Santorini is known for its starkness. Its whitewashed facades have never appeared dull or dismal but rather keep their immaculate appearance. We also can't help but see the contrasting blue dotted here and there throughout the city as though parts of the sky decided to take their rest nestled on the roof of a home. Or rather that the sea in a great storm splashed itself upon a door and left it's brilliant blue color behind as a token. Many things in Santorini make it beautiful but looking out at the caldera and back, my eyes can't help but be drawn to azure.</image:caption>

In Italy, the word "harvest" has a much different meaning than it does in my Midwestern hometown. Here harvest means combines, corn, and alfalfa. In Italy the major harvest comes to a head with vino. The reason so many small towns thrive in the heart of Tuscany. The wine harvest comes with excitement for the new blends, for the oak casks waiting to be filled, for the wine shop owners and the vintners who are praying for a good year. Either way, a harvest is the start of a new year for many and as the leaves on this vine began to turn, even I got excited for a new year, a new wine, and an abundant harvest.</image:caption>

Have you ever felt like you've stumbled on a place you're not supposed to be? On an early November day in Bellagio, that is exactly how I felt. Timing is everything! I use this Mantra quite often to describe what I do. This held true on a Sunday morning in Greve in Chianti. I was hesitant to bring my camera to the market square that day for the fear of there being too many people to get a shot. However, I decided to take it anyway because, after all, you never know . . . My instincts proved right when shortly after we arrived, I spied a lady's pink bicycle outside a local flower shop. As I was setting up to take the shot, a customer emerged and went to get on her bike and ride away! I begged "no, no, no" and motioned to her that I wanted to take a photograph and she politely moved to the side until I was finished shooting.</image:caption>

Wine and cheese - or is it wine versus cheese? In the basement of a butcher shop in Greve, in the Chianti area of Tuscany, stacks of cheese age in a cool stone room that resembles a wine cask. Under the low, barrel-vaulted ceiling, the cheese does not stand alone, but keeps company with representatives of the region's wine industry. In the dim light, the image required long exposures, just as the subjects themselves require time to mature. As two centurions stood watch over the process, we wondered whether their mission was one of mercy or envy - guarding their charges or their own survival, in an aging contest where the race does not go to the swift.</image:caption>

We saw time passing before us in more than one way in Cortona, a town in eastern Tuscany. Outside a regal doorway, we waited, and waited some more, for the Tuscan sun to brighten the skies dulled by lingering thunderstorms. Then, almost without warning, the storms began to pass. Time suddenly became short. After hours of waiting, we found ourselves hurrying to get the shot before the light overpowered the scene and set up contrasts too stark for our purposes. Moments before the sun reappeared, a warm glow pervaded the air, evenly lighting an uneven scene. While stucco succumbed to the effects of time, crumbling from the walls, the door within stood fast. And our time vanished, fading into the image as the steps below the door disappeared into the time-worn stone of the street.</image:caption>

In a little glen near Montalcino, the church St. Antimo stands gracefully among equally artful wild flowers, cypress trees, and olive trees. Inside this beautiful church, light streams through arching windows as it has for more than 900 years. The abbey that was once its neighbor and it's elder by more than 300 years, has vanished save for its foundation. Yet sunlight seems to have taken up permanent residence in the church, warming the coolest of stone, illuminating the mosaic of marble on floors and walls, and bending to the ancient carving of sturdy columns - gently touching all, like Grace itself.</image:caption>

In a watery Venetian "street" already lit with soft, inviting hues, we noticed light streaming down the canal, shimmering on the water's surface. We set up our cameras and waited for all the players to join in. Moments passed, travelers passed. Then, in a flash, a gondolier passed. For a photographer, "light" is what it's all about. After finding the scene I wanted to capture in the village of Oia, it became a waiting game for that special moment. Certain truths do not change with time. For nearly a century, the church St. Antimo has stood in a glen near Montepulciano. For every one of those years, golden light has illuminated her arches and corridors. Even before the structure was erected, that light flooded the hills and valleys surrounding the glen. That same light would fill other spaces today, if given opportunity. The church - sitting alone, save for wild poppies - is a lesson in yielding to that opportunity. In photographing the luminescence streaming through her, we allowed time to collect the gathering light, as we shot exposures of 30 and 40 seconds. We kept as quiet as possible, so as not to disturb the contemplative monks, their chanting, or the mass itself. In the solitude, silence and stillness of that timeless place, an unchanging truth was brought to our remembrance: "Be still and know that I am God."</image:caption>

Everything on the Greek Isle of Santorini seems designed for one time of day - sunset. White-washed buildings, blue domes, bell towers all expectantly stand watch over the sea. Human spectators gather every evening as the sun meets the waters, and clap in homage to the show's creator. Desiring a private viewing, we returned to the island in April, a month noted for storms that drive skies into a frenzy and visitors into refuge. After three days of heavy winds, the sky churned like a boiling stew. Then, as the winds calmed, so did the waters. And all that watched - both human and inanimate - saw the brilliant reward of reaching another day's close.</image:caption>

Their hooves stamp the dry ground, spraying up clouds of dust. The rider readies his reigns, giving them a crack in the air. Hooves fly from the ground and the cloud is now a storm, blocking any view from the front until a leader emerges from the squall, with his team bringing up his rear. There is no doubt about it, for these majestic competitors that the race is on.</image:caption>

The Lauterbrunnen Valley of Switzerland is almost something out of a fairy tale. In the late Fall when I came, the air was crisp in the mornings with an earnest sun that washed over everything during the day making it the perfect sweet spot of chill and warmth. Snow would fall and turn to liquid the minute it touched the ground creating an enchanting scene without the frigid air and wind that can sometimes accompany our crystalized friend. I climbed to my vantage point to look out over the valley and was struck by the glow in the sky as the last bits of daylight sunk behind the mountains allowing evening to fall over the town and begin a different kind of magic from the day before.

These homes in Amsterdam are about as iconic as this city's many attractions. Labeled "dancing houses," they are all pitched this way and that to account for the uncertainty of the canal. This knowledge only leads me to picture a family at dinner, gathered around their table when someone knocks over a bowl of fruit; what might usually be a quick clean-up turns into a game of pursuit as the fruit rolls this way and that; dancing along with the house and making it's inhabitants join in the jig as well.</image:caption>

Nestled in the town of Hintersee, Germany, this cove fogs our minds with peaceful thoughts of a world away from the hustle and bustle. One could sit on the water's edge for hours only to hear the soft waves tickle the stones surrounding the bank. Over time, of course, moss had found its home on these water-smoothed stones, painting the water a magnificent cool green. In all of this, we can't help but notice the patriarch stone presiding over the lagoon. With father and son standing atop this aged rock, our fog is cleared only to give way to a scene that promises to remain ever green.</image:caption>

It took us eight years to get back to Hallstatt, Austria, and one day to get the shot we wanted. When we saw "Swan Lake" in 1991, we realized its potential. We also knew that capturing the drama of this classic scene would call for a unique lighting situation. The day we arrived, it was calm, but disappointingly foggy. We went anyway, just to check out the general layout of the scene. As we got closer, the fog started to lift, quite rapidly. By the time we set up, the sun lit the fog in the distance, the water shimmered with smooth reflections, and the town itself seemed both to float on the water and to hover in the sky - all on a surprising first day.</image:caption>

Like an oft-told fairy tale. Like spritely characters reborn from childhood memory as faint, ghostly outlines. Like fancy and whimsy and delight. Like Paris. High on the only hilltop in Paris, the artist colony of Montmartre hides a quiet restaurant named "Poulbot." The front window, itself covered with fanciful figures from some unknown fantasy, frames another scene - illustrates another tale - playing out inside the tiny café. Under the glow of soft light, patrons speak in low tones, telling their stories on a gentle stage set with lace curtains gracing a wooden door, antique pitchers suspended by hooks, and prized photography dimly illuminated. Outside the window on the day we found Poulbot, the air was cold, the sky was threatening. But, somehow, everything seemed all right. The light was right. The colors were right. The story was right.</image:caption>

The name of the Parisian restaurant on the Avenue St. Germaine may be as mysterious as the men who once frequented the place. While we were told that "Les Deux Magots" means "The Two Chinamen," the word "magot" doesn't appear in most, if any, French dictionaries. That veil of secrecy seems appropriate, as the establishment reportedly served as a meeting place for international spies during World World II. The café was also haunted by the likes of writers Ernest Hemingway and Victor Hugo. The day we visited, the cold was blamed for keeping most human activity indoors. We, however, preferred imagining that a waiter stood outside in isolation not for want of clientele but in keeping with intrigue, perhaps ready to politely but firmly request the day's password.</image:caption>

We found a lesson in contradiction today in the Dordogne Valley, one of our favorite areas in France. Already known for the paradoxical warmth of color in its otherwise cold stone, the valley revealed a bit more of the contrast we seek but only a rare glimpse. In front of a house that - like the car outside it - may have seen better days, a tremendous wisteria vine was defying decay. For an instant, everything there was warmed by a golden afternoon light which the moment before had been eclipsed by a sudden, cool rain.</image:caption>

Shaftesbury sits like a golden jewel in the heart of Dorset, England. The rural market town was founded among lush, rolling hills by King Alfred the Great in the 9th Century. Alfred, acclaimed as one of the best kings in history, is noted for supporting religion, scholarship and education, and for defending against foreign trespass and domestic lawlessness. On a steep road careening down the 700-foot bluff that Shaftesbury calls home, testaments to Alfred's influence yet remain. The heraldic St. Peter's church stands at the top of the cobbled street and the protective Gold Hill Wall runs its length. And, as if recalling Alfred's military in miniature, cottages closed in rank like toy soldiers seem to keep one another from toppling down the golden hill into neighboring Blackmore Vale.</image:caption>

Have you ever felt that something good is waiting right around the corner, but you can't seem to get there? During several trips to Alsace, France, a little street kept attracting our attention. But each time, something was amiss. Scaffolding cluttered walls, paint colors waged war with themselves, light failed to cooperate with its subjects. One more trip, one more try, and we finally rounded that street's "corner." Peaceful colors, tidy surroundings, and willing light all came together. And the alleyway's hinted potential burst forth like the blooms and foliage running down the bricks and pouring through the shutters.</image:caption>

The city of Prague is home to the Charles Bridge.

As we travel, we become aware that the laws of the natural world apply universally.

Even in the light, memories can haunt.

When ocean and earth meet, more gathers than merely sand. Human spectators are unfailingly drawn to the scenes staged by players whose size and strength can both frighten and soothe, depending on their "mood". When peaceful, the ocean's edge is a haven. No matter how relentlessly the waves have beaten during the day, they dissolve in the salty mix of water, land and sky. And when the stage is softly lit by the last rays of the sun, the only participation required of the audience is to pull up a chair and watch.</image:caption>

A stand of aspen trees that I had previously passed many times, suddenly stopped me. The forest floor was ablaze with scarlet and gold hues. The Aspens, with their leaves turning gold themselves, were quaking as if they knew of the coming snow that was soon to follow. </image:caption>

Hidden gems can sometimes only be found by going on an excursion in search of them. In this circumstance, my travels took me just minutes from home and the hidden gem I found was one I had seen many times. When coming across it this time, however, the changing colors had skewed my vision and showed me sometime entirely new; almost as if the leaves had painted themselves in a more pleasing way to pose for the travelers that had taken them for granted before. So today whilst on the trail, I had to stop and pause to appreciate this flashing moment of autumn on the trace.</image:caption>

I was traveling the 17-Mile Drive on the Monterey Peninsula, headed toward a Pebble Beach landmark, when it began to rain. I asked myself, "Why am I going out here in this downpour"? The tourists who had gathered there apparently had answered that question already, as they beat a quick retreat from the threatening clouds.
The Lone Cypress, the rooted icon I had come to capture, had no choice but to stay. It wasn't going anywhere, so neither was I. Perhaps we'd both learned that thunderstorms pass, and on the other side of dismal often lies remarkable beauty. Leave too soon, and you'll miss it. As the clouds cleared and the sun beat down on a jagged precipice, two lone figures remained to revel in the sight - the cypress on its cliff, and I on mine.</image:caption>

A scene such as this does not render many words. Words would only cloud up the harmonious balance of water and sky interrupted by the distending dock. Scenes such as this should be revered. Very few things can be found that exhibit such color and yet at the same time seize your eye by the intensity of its starkness. This grove particularly held so much of each feature that I couldn't pass up the opportunity to let my mind wander amidst the oranges and yellows that contrasted so perfectly with the white bark that was wrapped around each slender trunk. As I took this shot, I tried to do it in such a way that anyone studying it would be able to revere it in the way that I had and to truly be able to see its radiance.</image:caption>

Shocking blue water is all you can see for miles. The aged yellow paint of the pillars gives off a glow which is illuminated by the sun shining above. A gentle breeze is cast out over the water creating tufts of waves emerging from the once placid surface and you can't help but think there could be anything more tranquil. A lone sailboat begins to emerge from behind a pillar; the sails blowing ever so slightly, just enough to move. You can almost feel the breeze as the boat glides forward. My emotions stirred as I tried to capture the moment for exactly what it was; a moment of discovering true Caribbean blue.</image:caption>

West Virginia is easily one of the most beautiful places I have traveled to. The forests are abundant everywhere you look and during autumn, shades of changing leaves engulf you as you drive down their many roads. On one such road, I came upon an old mill sitting in my path. The water wheel was old and rusted and matched the feel of the entire scene that lay before me. The ground was showered in sheets of color acting as a reflector for the trees. I knew I had come to this exact spot at the perfect time. The season explained itself as I stood and stared at the autumn mill.</image:caption>

A 200-year-old sturdy, lone cypress tree stands on Pebble Beach. In all of this, the cypress tree stands tall, sturdy and solid, undeterred by weather, time and water.</image:caption>

Sometimes long forgotten is just what - and where - you want to be. Gentle water, soft sand, brilliant sky, feathery clouds. By chance or by choice, this is one spot where being marooned might be a pleasant fate.</image:caption>

Mystery can always draw us in. Something light that can lead us beyond to something we do not know. From simply standing outside this woodland realm, my curiosity spiked at the stark white trees in contrast to their shaded companions that lay further inside the wood. As a child's mind carelessly wanders where it will; I could only wish my feet would do the same. But nonetheless; the realm remained a mystery; only to be seen from the outside, with pillars of wood capturing all wandering eyes.</image:caption>

A fisherman's life used to be a simple life. Rise in the morning, make your way to the docks, climb into your boat, and sail away for that day's catch.

I think the simplicity of the name leaves interpretation more available for the viewer. When I read the name of this image, I imagine time. Something suspended, held completely still, for a moment, a year; a millennia. I see the door no longer on its hinges but rather taking a more enduring residence in the dunes of sand that has occupied the home for years. The permanence of the sand leaves the door, the walls, the entrances; all suspended in that moment and many moments to come.</image:caption>

Something like this can be experienced long after the curtain closes which is something, I think, we can be eternally grateful for.</image:caption>
