Sometimes, the longer you study a subject, the more mysterious it becomes. Just before dawn on one of our first European trips, we forsook the bright warmth of our bed and breakfast to challenge the damp fog of an Irish morning. With only limited vision, we made our way step by dewy step, beginning with a gate that opened to a small valley. After walking a half mile through veritable landlocked clouds, we began not to see more clearly but to hear – great sounds of crashing water and the shrill calls of ravens.
Then, without further warning, a castle suddenly appeared from within the mist, as if resurrected from another time and place. As we studied the emerging landscape of the castle, each feature grew ever more vague with our consideration, begging more questions than answered. Who watched those walls and manned those turrets? Who roamed those stony halls and peered out those narrow windows? Who nightly fell asleep in those cold chambers and daily awoke to avian cries, the ocean’s roar and an impenetrable cloud of mysterious fog? Photo © copyright by John Scanlan.
