The Breakers
USA
This particular image has a unique story behind it. It was taken in my uncle’s building—once the old high school for the town of Burchard, NE. The school is a towering brick structure filled with so much history it would be impossible to absorb it all in a single day. But as we walked through its rooms, I tried to soak in every bit I could.
We wandered through classrooms where yearbook photos still lined the walls, and I couldn’t help imagining what life once looked like in this small-town high school—where so many transformative moments undoubtedly took place. Simpler, more innocent times, when one’s biggest worry was who to take to the dance or which homework assignment to tackle first.
After climbing the grand staircase, I paused at a breaker box on the wall. I’d seen old breakers before, but for some reason these “sparked” something in me, and I took a single snapshot—not expecting it to become anything significant. When I got home and studied the image more carefully on my computer, I immediately fell in love with it. A piece of old technology, now preserved on my modern monitor.
I’m so glad I captured that moment, because a week later those breakers were removed and replaced with a modern panel, and that piece of history faded—leaving only the part I carried with me. I’m thrilled now that others are able to carry it with them into their homes, so that even though the originals are physically gone, the history and the “spark” they ignited can live on forever.
